Why Making a Batman/Superman Movie is a Bad Idea

A few days ago Warner Bros. rocked Comic Con when they announced a Batman/Superman movie is in production and is due to be out in 2015. Fans of both superheroes have been cheering all over the world ever since the announcement was made and we are all impatiently waiting to see the showdown between DC’s two most popular heroes. The last time we saw the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight being bid against each other was in Frank Miller’s “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns” and that wasn’t really the mainstream Batman most people know and love (it was an old Batman coming out of retirement). It was only logical for Batman to win since he is the more popular of the two. The Caped Crusader beats the Kryptonian also in terms of gross revenue generated by their latest respective movies, as well. All of this is to say that if Batman and Superman meet on the big screen, then The Detective will probably win. I don’t know how well they will execute the idea, but I think now is not the time for such a movie and I will explain why.

Superman VS Batman

The Dark Knight Trilogy

Lets face it – Christopher Nolan‘s “Dark Knight” trilogy is considered by many to be the best comic book movies ever made. Even though “The Dark Knight Rises” had many plot holes and was a huge letdown compared to the “Dark Knight”, the trilogy is revered by both comic book fans and people who have never held a Batman comics in their life. The only problem is that the trilogy was as loosely based on the comics as “I, Robot” was loosely based on Asimov’s short stories. Don’t get me wrong, they are good movies, but they are not comic book movies. It’s hard to say they are even in the DC Universe. If you think I’m wrong, then imagine Batman from Nolan’s trilogy into the same universe as Superman from “The Man of Steel”. You can’t, can you? That’s because they have nothing in common. Nolan’s version of The Caped Crusader destroyed his chances of being seamlessly featured in any sort of movie if it’s even remotely related to the DC Universe.

DC vs. Marvel

Another problem is that DC didn’t manage to their job of bringing their characters to the big screen in the same way Marvel did. Think about it – “Iron Man”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Captain America”, “Thor”, “Iron Man 2” – all of them foreshadowed “The Avengers” and all of them were obviously in the same universe with the same rules and even looked alike. DC, however, has done nothing of the sort – “The Dark Knight” trilogy had nothing to do with the comics, let alone The Justice League, “The Man of Steel” and “Green Lantern” have pretty much nothing in common, and not to mention the fact that we are nowhere near Wonder Woman, Flash or Aquaman movies. For them to make a Batman/Superman movie right now with the current state of affairs is a rash decision, to say the least. There’s going to be so much that won’t make any sense. Before you make a crossover, you have to establish the characters (like Marvel did)– one Superman movie and technically zero Batman movies is just not enough. In my opinion, DC are chasing Marvel and are making huge mistakes in doing so. I hope I’m wrong about this because if I’m right, this movie will be one of the biggest disappointments of the decade.

Dave Bautista is cast as Drax The Destroyer

Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is being directed by James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead) has it’s second official cast member. The WWE superstar Dave Bautista will portray Drax The Destroyer, a role that previously was rumored to be played by Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones).

Now Bautista will work alongside Chris Pratt who recently was chosen to play the film’s lead, Peter Quill a.k.a Star-Lord.

THR informed that Bautista was competing for the role with Isaiah Mustafa, Patrick Wade and Jason Momoa. The WWE wrestler Dave Bautista appeared in the Man with the Iron Fists and will star opposite Vin Diesel in the upcoming Riddick movie.

The first comic book appearance of Drax The Destroyer, was in the Iron Man #55 in 1973  in addition to the first appearance of The Avengers post-credit scene foe, Thanos.

Drax was originally a human name Arhur Douglas whom Thanos had killed but was resurrecty by the Eternal Kronos, to fight against Thanos. At first Drax was more like the Incredible Hulk, with low intelligence and green skin to boot, but in 2005 he was remade into more of a “God of War” Kratos-like figure. After this change he has featured in the Marvel Cosmic resurgence with Annihilation and soon became a member of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

The goal and purpose of Drax in his ‘after-life’ is to remove Thanos from the universe.

Three Villains for ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′

The shooting has begun and the casting keep on getting bigger and bigger. We are talking about ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ starred by Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Peter Parker will return to the big screen in another movie about saving New York, fighting crime and injustice and working the great responsibilities that came with great powers.

Jamie Foxx will be ‘Electro’ in ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2′

After the success of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ grossing over 250 million dollars in 2012, Director Marc Webb brings up the sequel for the Marvel Comics superhero. In a franchise like Spiderman, producers and writers have been putting up the same plot line since the days where the Spiderman TV Show was aired. The plot keeps the line of following Peter Parker in his superhero journey fighting on every episode a different villain. This scheme is also used in the Batman production in the DC Comics Universe.

So every episode or every movie, curiosity made us wonder, which villain would be next? According to a latest casting update, Spiderman will be facing 3 antagonists.

In 2012 we read the news that Academy Award Winner, Jamie Foxx had agreed on portraying the role of Electro as ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ main villain. Electro’s birth name is Max Dillon. He was an electric engineer and meanwhile working a power line he was struck by a lighting gaining the ability to control electricity. According to latest resources Jamie Foxx Electro suit would be modified to a more realistic look instead of the green and yellow eternal suit from the comics.

Lately, comic blogs has mentioned about the possibility for Rhino to appear in Spiderman sequel. Rhino or better named, Aleksei Sytsevich, was another part of the Russia mafia who was chosen for his muscular physique and low IQ for several scientific and chemical tests. The treatments made him a superhuman agent. His abilities include superhuman strength, speed, endurance and a razor sharp horn. Aleksei’s powerful armor permanently bonded to his form, was modeled after the hide of a rhinoceros. Apparently, the character of Rhino will be portrayed by Academy Award Nominee, Paul Giamatti.

The third one on the row and that according to the history, will be a very important part of the story is the Green Goblin. Norman Osborn, the head of Oscorp and father of Peter Parker best friend will appear in the sequel but not as a main villain, not till the end of the movie (we presume). Osborn, an unethical industrialist that after drinking a serum that enhanced his physical abilities and intellect was driven to insanity will become Spider-man archenemy. In 2002 the Green Goblin was played by Willem Dafoe in ‘Spiderman’ directed by Sam Raimi. Academy Award Winner, Chris Cooper has been selected to played the role of Norman Osborn in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2″.

With these catalogue of villains for the upcoming movie, it appears that Webb is presenting the beginnings of the super villains group called the ‘Sinister Six‘. We can only expect that for the next sequel Spiderman will be facing Vulture, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter and a new version of Doctor Octopus and the Sandman.

Chris Pratt Lands the Role of Star-Lord

It’s official, Marvel has finally cast the lead role of Star-Lord to Chris Pratt in the James Gunn film Guardians of the Galaxy. Pratt stars in NBC’s comedy series Parks and Recreation, and has played interesting characters in films such as Moneyball and Zero Dark Thirty.

Despite the many names of actors looking for the part over the last few months, Pratt’s name was never mentioned until now.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows the story of a United States pilot who ends up in space in the midst of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone else is looking for. Star-Lord is the pilot and leader of the space superhero tema in the film.

In the comics is later revealed that the character is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father, hence Star-Lord develops son psychic-like abilities.

Henry Cavill and Ryan Reynolds May Return in Justice League?

The 2015 is already shaping up to be an epic year, with Marvel‘s Sequel The Avengers 2 and DC’s Justice League tentatively set to arrive that summer. Little has been confirmed for Justice League, which is being written by Will Beall (Gangster Squad). A new report has surfaced today that reveals which superheroes will be present in this massive ensemble, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Everything indicates that Henry Cavill and Ryan Reynolds may reprise their roles as the Man of Steel and Green Lantern.

Nothing has been said about the presence of Christian Bale as Batman, Warner Bros still needs a Batman, whether Batman’s alter-ego is Bruce Wayne or is a willing stand-in.

Hugh Jackman Teases More of The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman returns as The Wolverine on July 26, 2013. During a recent interview with Parade, Jackman gave a bit more of information about the highly anticipated upcoming film. As we all know, The Wolverine takes place in Japan, howevere there wasn’t an specific timeline for the story, was it before all the X-Men movies or after… Thanks to the Australian character actor we now have an answer to that dilema.

The Wolverine

The Wolverine

The movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him.”

This is something new, so far only seen in some comics of Wolverine. Apparently the film works its way through the pain and heartache due to the deaths that occurred in X-Men: The Last Stand, especially with Jean who was stabbed by Wolverine in the end. This experience must have taken Logan to the edge. The remaining question is who has learned a way to hurt him? my money is on Yuriko.

As a juicy piece of information, the get the fans all riled up, Jackman also revealed that there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it. This could be perceived due to the rumors that arised a couple of months ago, the gossip said that Famke Janssen (X-Men) was in Australia to do a cameo as Jean Grey.

The only confirmed fact is that Jackman won’t be the only one from the original X-Men trilogy to make a return. Jackman is also scheduled to appear as Wolverine in the upcoming sequel of X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past which will premiere on July 18, 2014.

Hugh Jackman will Slash his Way into X-Men: Days of Future Past

We previously wrote that Hugh Jackman was in talks to reprise his role as Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Today director Bryan Singer confirmed through his Twitter account that Jackman will return as the canadian claw wielding savage. “Of course Jackman is going to reprise his role! He loves the Wolverine character!

Days of Future past is a sequel to X-Men: First Class, because it involves time travel elements which can be linked to the story of characters from the previous films of Singer, who will also be included in the story. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were previously confirmed by Singer to reprise their roles as Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto. While ‘First Class’ stars James McAvoy (young Xavier), Michael Fassbender (young Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) will also be back for more mutant action.

Singer is looking to get other cast members, there are rumours circulating on the web saying that James Marsden is talks to return as Cyclops. Fans would rejoice if all the time travel elements fix the disastrous events of Brett Ratner‘s X-Men. There are also rumours that Famke Janssen would return as Jean Grey. Hope they bring back Taylor Kitsch to reprise his role as Gambit.

Jackman, who had a memorable cameo in “X-Men: First Class,” recently wrapped production of director James Mangold‘s “The Wolverine.” The extent of his role in “Days of Future Past” hasn’t been revealed, but it’s been suggested the three original-trilogy actors will spend limited time on screen, most likely in scenes depicting the dystopian alternate future. Maybe we’ll get to see the white haired Wolverine.

Days of Future Past would mark the seventh film for Jackman as Wolverine, counting 2013′s The Wolverine, out July 26 in the United States. Days of Future Past, a sequel to 2011′s X-Men: First Class and based on the classic comic book storyline that ran through Uncanny X-Men #141 and #142, is scheduled for release on July 18, 2014.

The sequel is based on 1981′s Uncanny X-Men which came from writer Chris Claremont and artists John Byrne and Terry Austin. The story is set in an alternate future where surviving mutants have been thrown in concentration camps, Sentinels are patrolling America, and most of the X-Men have been hunted down and killed. The present day X-Men are forced to stop a key event from unfolding in order to keep that future from occurring.
