The Power of Style – Change the way Others Perceive you Overnight

Author: Kirsty Sampson

You can’t underestimate the power of what we wear to impact strongly on the image we present i.e. the image of who we are as a person. How we dress is part of how we present ourselves and like it or not other people’s perceptions of you will be partially based on your style. Someone that you know very little will use the way you dress as an indicator of how you think and feel to a larger degree than someone you know well. This is why we’re programmed to make more of an effort with our appearance when meeting new people either in a social or professional capacity.

However the way that we dress generally is largely reflective of our attitudes and tastes, continuing to send a message about ourselves even to people you see every day. The way you dress almost certainly dictates how people react to you, on the street, in a shop, on dates or at the office. It has been proven that people are hired or promoted on the basis of their appearance alone, both consciously and unconsciously by the employer.

So, if you’re seeking to change how you’re perceived changing your clothing can be one of the easiest and also most effective actions you can take. Look at yourself objectively, imagining you are looking at a stranger if you have to, and ask yourself what impressions you could draw from your clothing, how you wear it and your personal grooming. A casual shirt for work might actually be seen as scruffy and disrespectful or a large gold watch seen as too showy for the office.

Work wear

Matching the office dress code is the first place to start as under and over dressing can be equally detrimental. While it might sound as though this means blending in with the crowd that is not the point of matching the dress code. Instead by following the general code you ensure that your appearance is in line with the way that the business wishes to present itself to clients, shareholders and its peers. Wearing a suit when everyone else is in t-shirt and jeans means you’ll look as though you don’t want to be there and are aspiring to a more corporate environment.

Remember though that dress codes are largely open to interpretation, in other words this is your opportunity to stand out as a well put together (and by extension smart and hard working) person. The most common office dress code tends to be ‘smart casual’ however this hybrid seems to be differently weighted from office to office. Wearing the bottom of a suit without the jacket or tie strikes the balance well. Ensure your clothes are freshly laundered and ironed and your hair neat. Signs that you’ve taken care over your appearance will result in more positive impressions.

Consider expressing your personality at the same time though. Personal style is akin to branding; you want to let people know what you’re about and develop a recognisable look e.g. wearing vintage pieces that show off your interests outside of work. I would advise saving any slogans or overt branding for outside office hours though as these are seldom well received in a professional environment.

Personal wear

What we wear in our spare time can differ depending on the setting we’re in or the company you’re with. What you wear on a shopping trip will rarely be the same as what you wear on a date. As I’ve mentioned above though everything you wear says something about you. Keeping your ‘casual’ clothes smart means the impression you give off generally is of a confident, in control and more successful person.

Having fun with your clothes is important too, for yourself and for how people receive you. Funny t-shirts for men show a cheeky side that is attractive to men and women. Humour makes you more relatable in many relationships from friendships to employer-employee relationships.

One golden rule

My golden rule is never to follow trends too closely. If you do you’ll find your wardrobe dates very quickly so you have to stay on top of the latest trends and therefore spend more money. Spending on trends is quite a gamble too as not all trends will suit you, in fact a great many may be totally inappropriate. You also run the risk of being perceived as having no style of your own, a sign that you’re easily led and lack original thinking. Find cuts and styles that suit you really well and buy within this range. You’ll find it easier to shop too because you can instantly identify the clothes that will work for you. Furthermore classic cuts will always be available; you won’t have them hunt down.

How is Fashion Defined Within Islam?

Author: Aisha Malik

Although many people are unaware of just how closely Islam and fashion are interlinked, it is true that the Muslim faith is one that relies on certain fashion elements much more than many other religions around the world.

The Koran speaks of clothing in a number of verses, particularly as to how one should dress for religious ceremonies as well as in the home, and in a community environment. The book also calls for modest dress to be worn at all times, so that skin is not visible and in particular so that men are not ‘tempted’ by women who look attractive.

Islamic Communities

Within Islamic communities, how a person dresses is considered an important show of their faith, and is also often linked to etiquette expectations and requirements. However, despite fashion being such a central part of Islamic culture in many respects, it was often received negatively around the world, particularly as garments such as the burka were regarded as barriers to co-operation and the integration of Muslims into communities and cultures where people of other faiths commonly made up the majority of the population.

There have been a number of changes in recent years that has seen Islamic fashion move away from the ‘ultra-conservative’ styles – although they are still worn by many – and items that would be considered closer to contemporary fashion become widely accepted and worn. That is not to say that the Islamic faith has been kicked to one side or disrespected in any way. In fact, one of the best things about modern Islamic fashion, particularly for women, is that it has kept everything that the Koran demands of it in terms of modesty and appearance, yet is filled a number of great garments that are attractive to women of any faith, not just those who are Muslim.

As Muslim communities have grown around the world, the influence of contemporary style in these countries has been allowed into Islamic styles. This is why today we see kaftan dresses or abayas that have luxury stitch detail or are adorned with patterns, and why we see jilbabs featuring patterns or in colours other than the traditional blacks, blues, and greys.

Women’s Rights

Prior to the progressive changes that swept through Islamic fashion, there were many people campaigning vociferously around the impact that clothes have on women. We touched earlier on the feeling that Muslim fashion was a barrier and prevented the integration of both men and women into society, however, many felt it went much further, and actively contributed to the oppression of women in society, even within the Islamic faith.

The more liberal stance now taken by many when it comes to fashion for women has been claimed as a victory, especially as dressing in modern, contemporary styles has allowed many more Muslim women to be successful and integrate into workplaces and communities than at any point in history.

These moves have again proven the value of fashion to the Islam faith, albeit in a different manner to which it has traditionally done so.

Aab Collection is an e-commerce retailer selling Islamic clothing, such as kaftan dresses, predominantly aimed at Muslim women with multiple roles to play in today’s society. A kaftan dress is a tasteful and elegant option for a woman to wear to a job interview.

Nina Garcia, Michael Kors , Heidi Klum: Project Runway Judges

For those who has seen ‘Project Runway’ at least five times, remember host Heidi Klum catch phrase “In Fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out” whose purpose of sending a message to the contestants that if they really want to get involved in the fashion world, don’t forget to always be innovating and creating something new, fresh and fierce. This catch phrase can be given to Michael Kors who leave the show after 10 seasons of being one of the three judges.

Lifetime Network explained that “Due to the back-to-back film schedule for seasons 10 and seasons 11 this summer, Michael was not able to commit to all the dates required for filming season 11.” On the other hand, the network confirms that Kors will be always a part of ‘Project Runway’ family and he will be returning as a guest judge for the final episode of season 11.

Replacing Kors, will be American Fashion Designer, Zac Posen. A former student from the Parsons’ School of Design who now has become avery well stablished name in Fashion Industry. His fashion collections has become the favorites for style leaders such as Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, Cameron Diaz, Natalie Portman and Beyoncé.

Project Runway” season 11 will premiere on January 24, 2013.

Vogue Editor-in-Chief: US Ambassador

The name from Vogue Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour is surrounding for placing in charge of the US Embassy in France. She is being under consideration by reelect President Barack Obama for the designation of one of the biggest names in fashion journalism.

Anna Wintour: Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief.

When news this smooth-political-controversial appeared, we must split the story in three question: Who? Why? Really?

If you are not a devoted fashionista, Anna Wintour name may not bring you too much information, but she is a part of global culture you may haven’t noticed. Anna Wintour is the currentEditor-in-Chied of Vogue Magazine. In Journalism the charge of Editor-in-Chief is one of the highest ranges, is the executive responsible for the content of the posts to satisfy the editorial line of the journal. In the Fashion World, Vogue is the bible, is an upcoming trip to the new trends in fashion. It is also one of the magazines with more circulation around the globe.

Even though she has been taking care of Vogue US edition, Anna Wintour was born in London, England in 1949. Wintour took charge of Editor-in-Chief in 1988, when the magazine was starting to become boring for their readers, so someone needed to shake things up.

Meryl Streep character of Miranda Priestley in “The Devil Wears Prada” is supposed to be inspired in Anna Wintour.

For a better appreciation of Anna Wintour, I must tell you she was the inspiration for “The Incredibles” (2004) character Edna Mode, who was the fashion designer of the superheros. In 2003, one of Wintour former assistants published the best-selling novel “The Devil Wears Prada” later made into a successful film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. In the film you can see the requirements Miranda Priestly assistants must live through, but in the book, there were more specific details, like making an assistant inspect a photographer garbage for a photos, he was suspicious of taking it from the private archive.

Even though, Anna Wintour has been a successful executive and a remarkable journalist, there is the interrogant, why President Obama chose a fashion expert for such a diplomatic charge.Sources have revealed that First Lady Michelle Obama is behind the Wintour pushing for Ambassador in France. The fact is that Wintour is the top fundraiser from Obama’s Campaign, so the charge is an award the White House is giving the Editor for her support during the past reelection campaign. I must include that Vogue Magazine has named Michelle Obama as one the best dressed women in the world. I’m not implying a dishonest plot, because First Lady Michelle Obama is best known for portraying a view of the american woman very reachable for any social status. I wanted to suggest that the First Lady and the Editor-in-Chief have kept kind of a friendship since 2009.

Already answering the why, many questions comes into my mind. Is Anna Wintour prepared for such a diplomatic position? Will she resign from Vogue?

Being an Ambassador of the United States means that you are chosen by the President himself, that you are his representative in that foreign country and the Ambassador must stay at least 3 years in charge. Just checking some US Ambassador resume, I found out that most of the diplomats started in the United States Foreign Service, that they must be involved in international trade and haan A+ in American History. Anna Wintour has the advantage for being a woman who has travelled around the globe looking for new trends, but will the balance between two jobs guarantied enough productivity for an era of economic crisis?

Anna Wintour is a huge fan of tennist Roger Federer. When he was playing the latest Grand Slam Roland Garros in Paris, France, Anna Wintour was spotted enjoying the match with Roger Federer’s family.
